La Asamblea General del grupo WEGENER, en su edición 19, tuvo su reunión bianual en Grenoble, Francia, del 10 al 13 de septiembre de 2018, en la Universidad de Grenoble en el instituto “ISTerre”. El grupo de científicos que conforma esta asamblea se concentra en la investigación de la deformación de la Tierra, el estudio de terremotos y zonas de fallas usando técnicas de geodesia y geodinámica. Dos científicos del IGEPN (la MSc. Patricia Mothes y el Ing. Pedro Espín Bedón) tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en esta reunión que agrupa al menos 150 especialistas en el tema y quienes expusieron temas relacionados a adelantos importantes y recientes en las áreas concernientes. La modalidad de la conferencia fue en base a sesiones y dentro de las mismas fueron presentadas charlas a lo largo de los 3 días. Un total de 70 charlas fueron impartidas y 100 posters exhibidos.

Entre los días 2 al 7 de septiembre en la ciudad de Nápoles – Italia (Fig. 1) se desarrolló la Conferencia Ciudades en volcanes 10 (COV10), una de las reuniones más importantes dentro de la comunidad vulcanológica mundial, la misma que contó con el concurso de cerca de 900 participantes de todo el mundo o y fue organizada por la comisión Cities on Volcanoes de la IAVCEI (INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF VOLCANOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY OF THE EARTH INTERIOR). La Conferencia Ciudades en Volcanes 2018, en su décima edición, denominada "Milenios de estratificación entre la vida humana y los volcanes: estrategias para la convivencia", tuvo como objetivo enfatizar sobre maneras sustentables de convivencia de las sociedades que habitan cerca de los volcanes. Al mismo tiempo, exponer el gran desafío que representa trabajar en la construcción y el fortalecimiento de la capacidad de recuperación de las sociedades modernas y complejas ante los peligros volcánicos a los que están expuestas, en especial para volcanes en los que los largos períodos de recurrencia no evidencian actividad reciente.

Técnicos del Área de Vulcanología del Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional: Ing. Marco Almeida e Ing. Pedro Espín, participaron con diversas ponencias en el Taller de Monitoreo Volcánico ofrecido por la Universidad de Hilo en Hawaii, brindado por el Centro para el Estudio de Volcanes Activos - CSAV (por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del cual además recibieron instrucción por parte de Científicos del Programa de Asistencia en Desastres Volcánicos - VDAP (por sus siglas en inglés) y el Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos - USGS (por sus siglas en inglés).

Lanzamiento del Proyecto DIPECHO PLAN-CARE

El IG-EPN asistió al evento de lanzamiento del Proyecto DIPECHO 2018-2019 ejecutado entre PLAN International y CARE en los cantones de Latacunga, Pujilí y Saquisilí (provincia de Cotopaxi) y Manta y Pedernales (provincia de Manabí). Este evento se realizó en la ciudad de Latacunga el martes 31 de Julio a las 10h00 en el Auditorio de la Gobernación de Cotopaxi.

Estuvieron presentes el perfecto de la provincia de Cotopaxi el Ing. Jorge Guamán, representantes de los GADS cantonales de Cotopaxi y de los dos cantones de Manabí (Manta y Pedernales), la Gobernación de Cotopaxi y la Zonal 3 de la Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos
Por su amplia trayectoria en vigilancia volcánica y sísmica, el Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional va a dar el apoyo técnico para brindar los insumos sobre las amenazas volcánicas y sísmicas.

Este lunes 23 de julio, el Municipio de Quito firmó un convenio de cooperación con la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador y la Escuela Politécnica Nacional para la primera etapa de actualización de la microzonificación sísmica en Quito. La EPN participará en este proyecto a través del Instituto Geofísico.

El Taller 2018 Sobre Evaluación de Peligros Volcánicos fue llevado a cabo en la ciudad de Arequipa, Perú, entre el 15 y 22 de abril de 2018. Este evento tenía como objetivo explorar el diseño y estructura de la evaluación de peligros volcánicos para las diferentes audiencias.

El Taller 2018 Científico Bianual de UNAVCO fue llevado a cabo en Broomfield Colorado en las afueras de Denver, USA, entre el 26 y 29 de marzo de 2018.   Tuvo como objetivo promocionar la geodesia en geociencias y sus aplicaciones hacia la sociedad.  Se trató diversos temas como cambios en los niveles del mar, controles de masa de hielo en las zonas polares, la atmósfera y sus cambios, nuevas metodologías de geodesia para el estudio del monitoreo de volcanes con GPS, InSAR, modelamiento de los datos y la aplicación de geodesia al estudio de zonas de subducción.  El evento fue realizado con el auspicio de la NSF (National Science Foundation) de los Estados Unidos.

Se hizo énfasis de forma particular en los estudios que emplean tecnología GPS en tiempo cuasi-real para la detección de tsunamis, uso de InSAR y de nuevas constelaciones de satélites, además de la práctica de geodesia en el fondo del océano en zonas de subducción.

IGEPN participa en la reunión bianual de UNAVCO en Denver, Colorado, USA, para fomentar el uso de GPS e InSAR en monitoreo geofísico

La USGS (Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos) a través del Programa de Asistencia para Desastres Volcánicos (VDAP por sus siglas en inglés) y el Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC) organizaron la I Reunión Operativa de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Geodesia Volcánica (GeoVol). El Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (IG-EPN) participó en dicho encuentro mediante sus delegados, los funcionarios Fis. Santiago Aguaiza y Tlgo. Marco Yépez, quienes expusieron el estado del conocimiento de las técnicas de monitoreo de deformación volcánica en el Ecuador.
