El Taller 2018 Sobre Evaluación de Peligros Volcánicos fue llevado a cabo en la ciudad de Arequipa, Perú, entre el 15 y 22 de abril de 2018. Este evento tenía como objetivo explorar el diseño y estructura de la evaluación de peligros volcánicos para las diferentes audiencias.

El Taller 2018 Científico Bianual de UNAVCO fue llevado a cabo en Broomfield Colorado en las afueras de Denver, USA, entre el 26 y 29 de marzo de 2018.   Tuvo como objetivo promocionar la geodesia en geociencias y sus aplicaciones hacia la sociedad.  Se trató diversos temas como cambios en los niveles del mar, controles de masa de hielo en las zonas polares, la atmósfera y sus cambios, nuevas metodologías de geodesia para el estudio del monitoreo de volcanes con GPS, InSAR, modelamiento de los datos y la aplicación de geodesia al estudio de zonas de subducción.  El evento fue realizado con el auspicio de la NSF (National Science Foundation) de los Estados Unidos.

Se hizo énfasis de forma particular en los estudios que emplean tecnología GPS en tiempo cuasi-real para la detección de tsunamis, uso de InSAR y de nuevas constelaciones de satélites, además de la práctica de geodesia en el fondo del océano en zonas de subducción.

IGEPN participa en la reunión bianual de UNAVCO en Denver, Colorado, USA, para fomentar el uso de GPS e InSAR en monitoreo geofísico

La USGS (Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos) a través del Programa de Asistencia para Desastres Volcánicos (VDAP por sus siglas en inglés) y el Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC) organizaron la I Reunión Operativa de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Geodesia Volcánica (GeoVol). El Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (IG-EPN) participó en dicho encuentro mediante sus delegados, los funcionarios Fis. Santiago Aguaiza y Tlgo. Marco Yépez, quienes expusieron el estado del conocimiento de las técnicas de monitoreo de deformación volcánica en el Ecuador.

Entre el 4 y el 22 de diciembre del 2017, el Museo de Historia Natural “Gustavo Ocres V.” y el Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional homenajearon a las Montañas con una serie de exposiciones. Algunas instituciones visitaron el Centro Terras del Instituto Geofísico en donde se explicó las diferentes labores de monitoreo de la actividad sísmica y volcánica, y los instrumentos que se utilizan en todo el Ecuador. Por otro lado, el recorrido en el museo de Historia Natural consistió de varias paradas en las que se compartió las teorías del origen del universo, las galaxias y planetas, la estructura interna de la Tierra, la teoría de la tectónica de Placas, la importancia de la geología para el entendimiento de los fenómenos naturales que ocurrieron hace cientos de millones de años y los fenómenos sísmicos y volcánicos.

Gracias a la invitación del Consejo Ciudadano Sectorial de Desarrollo Urbano, Hábitat y Vivienda – MIDUVI Pichincha, un técnico del Instituto Geofísico estuvo presente en el evento "PREVENCIÓN Y RIESGOS EN EL CONTEXTO DE LA NUEVA AGENDA URBANA HABITAT III", realizado el día 16 de diciembre de 2017 en Tabacundo en el coliseo Los Chasquis.

El Museo de Historia Natural Gustavo Orcés V. y el Instituto Geofísico de la Politécnica Nacional festejan el día de las montañas. Entre el 04 y el 22 de diciembre de 2017 se presentarán exposiciones donde, mediante ejemplos simples y experimentos, se pretende enseñar acerca de la estructura interna de la Tierra, los sismos y los volcanes.

El Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional destina buena parte de sus recursos a la creación e impresión de material de difusión sobre fenomenología volcánica, además ha incursionado en el uso de medios virtuales y redes sociales para acercarse a la comunidad. Estableciendo una vía de comunicación directa que le permite, no solo compartir contenidos en tiempo real, sino también recibir la retroalimentación e inquietudes del público.

Los técnicos del IG están conscientes de que la temática volcánica puede resultar un tanto compleja en especial para el público más joven. Es por esto que se ha puesto en marcha la iniciativa “Conocimiento volcánico al alcance de todos”, la cual pretende diversificar el material de difusión de manera que sea más inclusivo, permitiendo llegar a más personas.

El día 08 de noviembre de 2017 en el marco del evento "Quince años de la erupción del volcán El Reventador: memorias y lecciones aprendidas" llevado a cabo en las instalaciones de la EPN, se hizo el lanzamiento del nuevo Personaje Institucional del IG-EPN.

Patty es la caricatura de una vulcanóloga, basada en la imagen de la Msc. Patricia Mothes, ex jefa del área de vulcanología del Instituto Geofísico. Según su creador, el Ing. Sierra, su imagen fue escogida puesto que ella ha tenido una participación muy activa en los medios de comunicación por lo cual es muy querida y conocida por el público.

Junto con el lanzamiento del personaje se hizo la presentación del primer material del IG especialmente diseñado para el público joven. El tríptico “¿Qué es un volcán?, aprendiendo con ejemplos simples” ya está disponible en su versión impresa y puede también ser descargado en versión digital en dos idiomas:

Estos son los primeros productos de un proyecto que pretende comunicar la información de una manera más visual y llamativa que permita que los conceptos perduren en la mente de las personas, ayudando a crear una sociedad más educada y resiliente.
